Corpse Reviver No.1: Camille’s Red Vermouth, Calvados, Cognac, Bitters

Red Vermouth Cocktail: Corpse Reviver No.1

Corpse Reviver No.1 is not for the faint hearted. Dating back to 1860s, the Corpse Reviver was London's first cocktail. The No.1 was popularised at the The Savoy's American Bar by Harry Craddock in the 30s, who said that No.1 should "be taken before 11AM, or whenever steam or energy is needed".

Corpse Reviver No.1 is basically Cognac fortified with Calvados with the edges smoothed with red vermouth. In our version, we've gone for a more traditional version which is heavier on the Cognac. We have also used a local Apple Brandy, Greensand Ridge from the Weald in Kent rather than Calvados to bring it closer to home.

Method:

Mix

25ml London Vermouth Company No.2 Camille’s Red

25ml Greeensand Ridge Apple Brandy, but you can substitute Calvados

50ml Cognac - I used Remy but if you wanted to go full english (it is a breakfast drink after all) try Brightwell Vineyard's Rush Brandy made exclusively from grapes grown and fermented in Oxfordshire's Thames valley.

With a dash Angostura Limited's bitters

Stir over ice & strain in pre-chilled coupe glasses.

Handle with care!
